"St. Joseph's Villa" by George Bruner and Wayne Dementi
At last! 175 years in the making! St. Joseph's Villa is proud to announce that it has published St. Joseph's Villa, a lavish, 128-page, full-color book describing the history, accomplishments and people of St. Joseph's Villa.
Written by George Bruner and published by Dementi Milestone Publishing, the book includes chapters describing how St. Joseph's Villa evolved from a small orphanage and school in downtown Richmond, Virginia into one of the largest children's nonprofits in Virginia. The book includes chapters on the Villa's founding in 1834 by the Daughters of Charity, how the orphanage and school grew, even during the Civil War and other conflicts, and how Major James H. Dooley provided the financial support to construct one of the East Coast's first "villa" style orphanages. Other chapters describe "Villa life" in the 1930's, '40's and '50's, and how boys first started coming to the orphanage. The final history chapters describe how St. Joseph's Villa developed new services to meet evolving community needs following the Daughters of Charity's withdrawal from the Villa in 1977.
This new book includes many archival photographs from private collections, as well as beautiful current photographs of Villa grounds, buildings and staff. This limited-edition publication also includes descriptions of the St. Joseph's Villa Alumni Society's activities and reflections by many alumni and staff about the special times they had at St. Joseph's Villa.
