The Lewis Children’s Center

The Lewis Children s Center is a full-service child development center located on the St. Joseph s Villa campus at 8000 Brook Road. The Center serves approximately 120 children a day in its Infant/Toddler, Preschool and After-School programs.

Lewis Children’s Center offers infant, preschool and after-school care and education for children from six weeks old through middle school. Because children learn through play and hands-on experiences, teachers provide a variety of activities geared to the developmental age of the child. This year, we adopted Creative Curriculum, a developmentally appropriate curriculum for early childhood. The curriculum also supports the foundation of comprehensive standards suggested by the Virginia Department of Education. (These standards provide a set of quality indicators for literacy, mathematics, science, history and social science, physical and motor development, and social and emotional development.) In addition to these learning experiences, LCC offers a beautiful campus, caring trained teachers, bountiful resources, and a diverse population to better equip children for real-life experiences.

Lewis Children’s Center is taking part in a pilot program sponsored by the United Way, Success by Six and Child Savers. The pilot is part of Virginia’s Star Quality Initiative, a voluntary quality rating and improvement system (QRIS) for early childhood classrooms. It sets a continuum of clearly defined “Star levels” of increasing quality. The four standards in the QRIS focus on education, qualifications and training, interactions, structure and environment and infrastructure. The goal is to develop a user-friendly rating system to serve as a powerful education tool for parents, informing them about quality as they consider options for their children’s development and education.

Philosophy

LCC is committed to providing a safe, healthy, and stimulating environment. Our focus is on your child’s development according to age and developmental readiness. Our mission is to serve children and their families by providing educational, innovative programs. Lewis Children’s Center offers infant, preschool and after-school care and education for children from six weeks old through middle school.

The learning centers the children visit in the morning focus on meeting the specific needs of each child by using carefully planned activities and regular evaluations. The supervised afternoon learning centers are less structured activities that continue to support the children by providing guidance and security, allowing them to develop confidence, competence, and an appreciation of others. LCC offers children a diverse population which allows children to be better prepared for real life.

For kindergarten children, transition from one setting to another can be difficult. Therefore, when the children arrive at the center from school in the afternoons, they are given lunch and a place to relax with time for songs, games, and a chance to share experience of the day. Children are taught to get along together by being encouraged to talk things through in order to hear the other person’s point of view.

The best assurance for the success of your child in our Center is close cooperation and understanding between parent and staff.

Our commitment is to provide quality childcare in a model program where each child is respected and treated as a unique person. At any time, if you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to speak with any one on the administrative staff or your child’s teacher.
